BTS Break Spotify Record?

BTS’s “Butter” got off to a smooth streaming start on Friday, notching the biggest song debut in Spotify history.

The hotly anticipated disco-pop anthem earned 11.042 million global Spotify streams yesterday, breaking the platform’s opening day record formerly held by Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber’s “I Don’t Care” (10.977 million on May 10, 2019). “Butter” debuted at No. 2 on the global Spotify chart overall, behind Olivia Rodrigo’s “Good 4 U” (12.192 million), which has ruled the global chart since Monday.

BTS’s newest single scored the ninth-biggest single-day streaming total overall, behind two Rodrigo songs ( “Good 4 U” and “Drivers License”) and a handful of Christmas classics.

“Butter” debuted at No. 10 on the U.S. Spotify chart with 1.917 million streams—a career best for the group—trailing nine songs off Rodrigo’s new album, Sour, which came out yesterday. It’s a testament to BTS’s global popularity that more than 9 million of the first-day streams for “Butter” came from outside the United States.

This marks BTS’s best single-day Spotify performance by a huge margin. Their previous best came last summer with “Dynamite,” a similarly ebullient disco-pop smash that debuted with 7.778 million global and 1.824 million U.S. Spotify streams.
